Memo, that's essentially how Kevin explained the conversation between Frank Agrama and himself concerning the future of Robotech and this project being greenlit.rtsurfer wrote:
THIS PART IS WHATS NOT NEEDED...apparently they were afraid the remaining fans would think Robo-Tech had no future so they decided to use a project started with him to keep the fans interested.
YES, SO THE FANS DONT THINK THIS WAY. KEVIN EVEN SAYS THAT IT WAS IN DEVELOPMENT WHILE CARL WAS ALIVE. NOT JUST SOMETHING LOCKED IN A VAULT OR SOMETHING.

When I watched part 1 for the first time it actually caught me off guard, I certainly didn't expect to hear anything like this. Kevin really should consider explaining their conversation and the events that followed better if that's not what happened.

I THINK THIS IS WHY FRANK CHANGED HIS MIND ABOUT PRODUCING A ROBOTECH STORY RATHER THAN WAIT FOR THE RLAM.
I CAN SEE NOW WHY THEY CHOSE THIS SIDE STORY. CARLS DEATH AND SOMETHING TO HONOR HIM WITH. ACTUALLY 2 THINGS. THE DOCUMENTARY AND THIS SIDE STORY, 2 CARL MACEK PROJECTS THAT HE WAS WORKING ON AS OF 2010. I KINDA HAD AN IDEA ABOUT THIS BUT WAS NOT SURE. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE THE SENTINELS.

IT HAPPEN AT 7:45 FIRST PART OF VIDEO. FANS WERE ASKING.IIRC Tommy has already said that Carl Macek began writing this project before he died and he was finishing it. Also, Kevin said it started with Carl Macek early in 2010. So yeah work was being done on it but according to them it was greenlit, in other words the go ahead to animate and complete it when Carl Macek died. There's also Kevin's story about Frank coming to him worried that the fans would think Robotech had no future. He said something about reassuring them it would and he greenlit Carl Macek's project.

YES!!! THIS IS THE RTSURFER I KNOW. AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. I HATE TO BE THE GUY WHO MIGHT KNOW WHATS GOING ON BUT AT THE SAME TIME IF THEY WOULD HAVE SAID THIS SOONER MAYBE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN MORE REASONABLE.
WHAT I MEAN ABOUT WHATS GOING ON IS OUTSIDE THE PANELS. I COULD REPORT ON IT BUT ITS MUCH BETTER WHEN HG REPORTS IT ON VIDEO. SINCE THEY ARE THE SOURCE.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT INTEREST ME SINCE IT COULD MEAN MANY POSSIBILITY'S.
MY OPINION IS NEW ANIMATION BUT MAKING IT LOOK RETRO TO REBOOT STORY'S OR ADD STORY'S THROUGH THE 85 EPISODE SERIES.

Yes, Kevin does say fans were asking online what was going to happen to Robo-Tech without Carl Macek, which in and of itself seems odd since he had almost no involvement with the franchise for 10 years. Besides, weren't fans already asking about the future of Robotech before Carl Macek passed? Until what about a year before his death his only real involvement for like what 20 years was doing prefaces and the like and the incomplete pilot for RT3K which most fans apparently hated. Of course there were those fans that always felt Carl Macek was Robotech and still its future even though it had become Tommy's baby.
Then Kevin goes on to say Frank Agrama came into his office upon hearing of Carl's passing to tell him that the fans needed to know Robotech would go on, had to go on, will go on if only for Carl. Then HG made a full scale commitment to the Robotech franchise and he greenlit this project.
Was this decision inspired by his passing or by reading fan concerns online? If Frank thought of doing something to remember Carl upon hearing of his death, that's pretty cool, if it was a calculated move because they read online that fans thought the franchise would end with Carl then shame on them. Yeah, I know companies do things like this all the time for profit so why should HG be any different.
I just wish they would have made it more clear how this project came about and that it was meant to honor Carl.

RELAK
Also, "HG has increased the amount of animation ordered" sounds like another stalling line.
All it is doing is increasing expectation.
Expectations that are too high tend to get squashed faster and harder
Kevin McKeever
Not a stall just what happens when you order MORE minutes of animation. You simply need more time to complete it.
Harmony Gold is very pleased with the animation that has come in so far. HG is impressed enuogh that we have ordered more animation from the studio so in the end you are going to get more Robotech.
This means that our completion date has been pushed back to late 2011 or early 2012.
Right now the clip we show at cons has some unfinished animation (very evident in some of the shots BTW) so we are not releasing it online yet. As the project gets closer to completion later this year you will be hearing alot more about it.

Is the new animation project now a series?
From the therealmtoys.com/wordpressorg/17508/anim...lowdown-on-robotech/ write up:
* A new, as-yet untitled animated series,...
On their facebook, Kevin is pointing to this review as "a good write up of the Anime Expo Robotech Panel". Its apparently an inaccurate article unless they changed their minds because IIRC Tommy said this project wouldn't be a series.
Perhaps the more mins of animation is a reference to serializing it. If that's the case, hopefully a story intended to be a one-shot doesn't get messy stretched out over however many episodes.
Kevin also linked to this review on his blog robotechnews.blogspot.com/2011/07/anime-...l-write-up-from.html except there he called it a "great writeup". On his blog he has this comment, "Our critics cant even quote us correctly...", which is an interesting quote since "series" is apparently an inaccurate description. I don't recall them ever calling it one on the AX videos, or anywhere else, have they? Thanks Darkwater, for pointing that out over @ MW.
Which brings up something else very interesting, also over @ MW Jasonc posted "...Toynami says that the toys haven't been made yet,...". www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showt...ew=findpost&p=917667

I'll ask the question here since I was un-liked from HG's facebook page and my question/comment apparently deleted.

Congrats on being unliked on their Facebook like me.
I still think the longer production and more animation being made is due to them modifying the video after people started complaining that LLA footage would be used. I think it's strange that a supposedly small production (when compared to Shadow Chronicles/Rising) could take such a long time to produce.
Any regarding the toys, why would be believe Toynami over Mckeevie? Afterall, Mckeevie's never steered us wrong before.

I'm not taking any sides until Mav chimes in and sets us all straight. Now HE'S someone who's never steered us wrong!
