NOW DOES THE PLANE TRANSFORM? I DON'T THINK I SAW IT TRANSFORM IN THE COMICS.
The ConBat does not transform. The Condor is supposed to transform, though I doubt Tommy can be bothered to include that as it would cause far too many problems.
OK, THANKS FOR THE INFO BROOK.
FOUND THIS BUT YOU GUYS HAVE MORE INFO ON THE CONBAT.

Conbat SFA-5
Also known as: "Bat", Convert
Heavy Ordnance Strike Fighter
STATISTICS:
Designation: SF/A-5
Mecha Class: Space fighter/interceptor, aerospace capable.
Crew: 1 pilot.
DIMENSIONS
Length: 9.70m
Length: 17.10m
Height: 4.10m
Wingspan: 9.50m
Weight: 12.90 tons (dry)
ARMAMENT
2 x forward facing particle-beam cannons
4 x fixed hardpoints for various mission-specific heavy ordnance bombs and missiles
DESCRIPTION:
This non-transformable fighter was developed by the Robotech Expeditionary Force to provide for rapidly deployable, fast-attack, heavy-ordnance delivery in support of REF military operations (in particular, the first Earth Reclamation mission of 2038.)
Primarily a space-based fighter, it can also operate well within atmospheric conditions. Usually teamed with support of the Condor battloids, the Conbat (also known as the "Bat") proved very successful during its career. They were eventually phased out as the more advanced Alpha and Beta Fighters assumed the multi-purpose roles of the Robotech Expedition's primary strike fighter/bomber.
First Appearance:
Episode 71 - "The Secret Route"
The Conbat can also carry heavy ordnance to strike hardened targets.
The Conbat was used against the Invid during the first ill-fated attempt to liberate the Earth in 2038.

Let it never be said that Tommy never met a plot hole he didn't think was unimportant...
- Robotech RPG 2nd Edition, p.131First flown in 2013....Designed initially as a fighter/interceptor
So...flying a full 2 years before the REF is even formed and initially an interceptor.

I went to the Otakon this weekend; I missed Noboru Ishiguro but I caught the Macross DeCulture & Tony Oliver panels. Macross Deculture was like a Macross for Dummies panel for newbies. Tony Oliver was a real nice guy and I found out he is going to be involved in the Robotech sidequel.

This is sorta an update on the sidequel, aka rt2011/12 or the new unnamed Robotech animated project.

Macross World really is the best source for Robotech news, isn't it?
