My big question at this point is, just how long will the series run?So far, this is the only forum where I see a few making a big deal about the cover, or thinking that the ferret is humping Minmay. How it translated into a complaint about people not criticising it like they have with Tommy's designs is also only done here. The comparison is laughable at best, but in anycase, I'm gonna skip the frivolous nit-picking, and say that I'm so happy that the second book is coming out in what, about a month or two? As I've been collecting the Macross Ace magazines, I can only say that the changes are small, some larger than others, but will be much more interesting to talk about than the "judging a book by its cover" issue.
While the comic is clearly inspired by Yoshikau Yasuhiko's "Gundam the Origin," I doubt Mikimoto will take the same tack of spending several volumes on flashback material; I also doubt he'll include the postwar episodes. He's definitely shown a willingness to deviate from the original story, but I don't know if that means the story will get more compressed, or he'll add more original material, or both.
So far we've gotten five chapters, with most of episode 3 of the show eliminated, and episode 5 completely altered. The next issue of Macross Ace (due in September, along with Vol. 2 of the comic) will be about the Mars Base. I'm guessing Volume 3 will have that, Minmay's birthday, and the Miss Macross Contest. If that's the case, Volume 4 would have Hikaru and the others captured by the Zentradi, and would probably end with the Macross returning to earth.
So, assuming he doesn't change the story TOO much, it would probably end up being 7 or 8 volumes...of course, I'm kind of hoping he DOES change stuff around, and adds more DYRL into the mix.
Of course, I've been very wrong about stuff like this before. I originally figured that "Gundam the Origin" would probably run for about 9 or 10 volumes...but Volume 21 just came out a couple of months ago...

THANKS FOR THE INFO GUBABA.
I WAS ALSO THINKING THE SAME THING OF HOW LONG WILL MIKIMOTO WILL BE ON THE PROJECT. HOPE LONG ENOUGH FOR THE SERIES. MAYBE A FEW EXTRAS AT THE END. SOMETHING CLOSE TO MACROSS FLASHBACK AND DROPS THE WHOLE MACROSS II OUT.

As for how long it'll take, that's a different question than how long it'll be. Macross Ace (the magazine which contains Macross the First) is pretty clearly patterned after Gundam Ace magazine. Gundam Ace tested the waters pretty slowly...it was a quarterly magazine for its first year, bimonthly for its second, and monthly after that. In other words, sales were such they were able to publish it more frequently. I think they're doing something similar with Macross Ace...in its first year, it was published three times, and now it's quarterly. If sales remain strong, I'm guessing it will go to bi-monthly next year.
I can't see it being popular enough to go monthly, but maybe I'm just being pessimistic.
Anyway, my point is that, at quarterly, with three chapters per book, we'll be getting one volume per year most years, which could take an awfully long time. If it becomes bi-monthly, then that's two volumes per year, and the series could be done in three or four years.
Mikimoto has also been doing another comic, " Ecole du ciel ," in Gundam Ace, but it's been on hiatus since he started Macross the First...will he stay away from that until The First is finished? I'd kind of like to see that comic finished as well...

Fans seem to forget that Mikimoto is simply following his old friend's advice about the franchise. SDFM was a historical "drama" about the events of SW1! In Kawamori's mind it isn't imutable canon. While the comic is clearly inspired by Yoshikau Yasuhiko's "Gundam the Origin," I doubt Mikimoto will take the same tack of spending several volumes on flashback material; I also doubt he'll include the postwar episodes. Thus the literary license Mikimoto is taking is just as valid as the TV show. Macross Ace is focusing on different areas than the TV show, it doesn't necessarily make it wrong...
Much like WWII movies take dramatic license with history so does the Macross productions and literary works...
I am very curious how and what Mikimoto will focus on in the history of Space War 1 in The First.
Will he draw from DYRL or SDFM or both or come up with completely original ideas in certain situations?
Though I am hopeful that the manga will have an ending. Particularly since he's put another book on hiatus to do thins one and there is only so much drama you can milk out of Space War I....

I AM ENJOYING IT FOR WHAT IT IS AND THE MESH OF DYRL AND SDFM SURE MAKES IT GOOD. AND JUST THE UPDATES TO OUR CURRENT TIMES IS REFRESHING. SO FAR THE BOOK IS MOVING ALONG FINE FOR ME. NOT TO SLOW OR TO FAST. BUT ENOUGH NOT TO BE BORED CONSIDERING I KNOW THE STORY ALREADY.Though I am hopeful that the manga will have an ending. Here we have a guy that thinks that the cover image goes too far into zoophilia territory. Then we have another guy that is complaining that there not enough complaints about the image in question. Both of these guys are also complaining that the manga changes some elements of the story presented in the original show and last, but not least, we have the 2nd guy (the same one that is complaining that there are not enough complaints about the cover image) that the people that complained about Shadow Chronicles excessive T & A and the changes to the Robotech story, are not complaining about the cover image and the changes made in the Macross The First Manga. (unfortunately, this 2nd guy does not specify who is he referring to much less, provides any indication that he has taken the time to ask about this in the proper forum)
The cover image is definitely suggestive however, at the end of the day it all boils down to how we, as individuals, like to see things. I guess it goes to show that "when you are hungry, everything tastes good"
As a long time anime follower, I expect to see some kind of fan service in the shows or products (like manga). Granted, there are some productions that rely too heavily on the fan service while others are more subtle. There is also good fan service and poorly executed fan service. Unfortunately, I feel that shadow Chronicles fan service is poorly executed because the T & A is not used as mere eye candy, it becomes to norm, which in my opinion, it does not go very well with a story like Robotech (this is not Agent Najica for crying out loud).
Fan service in Macross is nothing new and i'm sure it will not be the last time that will be presented in a Macross production. Let's not forget that the original TV show have some shower scenes, DYRL had another couple scenes, even the Macross 7 manga has a shower scene!!!
As far as the changes in the story go, it is obvious that MEMO and Juan are not familiar with the Macross universe because there are several takes on the Space War I story starting with DYRL, then followed by productions Like Macross Rhapsody in Love; Macross DYRL Drama edition and Macross Inside Story (although this last one, its focused more on the lost 2 years of the original Macross show)
Changes or retells are nothing new in the Macross universe.
I have yet to read the Macross the First Manga (i'm waiting for it to arrive along with my first 25 issues of Macross Chronicle ) and I'm a firm believer that in order to make an informative opinion or argument, I have to get acquainted with the material in question (and with acquainted, I mean understand). Therefore, I will reserve my opinion about the manga until I read it.
Sadly, this does not seem to be the case for MEMO and Juan, whom in episode 23 of Juan's podcast, they go on mission talking about the manga when is clearly obvious that neither one of them has read it. I also like the part where MEMO says that the Macross II creators picked the concept of using music to control the Zentraedi from Robotech, but this is material for another thread.
