Talks with Palladium

A few weeks ago I spoke with one of the guys at Palladium about the possibilities of working on a Robotech miniatures line. We went over a lot of costs and general ideas. They were open to the idea and want to look into things further. They did like the prototypes I'd pieced together, which I was quite happy to hear that.

Tom Roache has also been in discussion with them in regard to his rules for Robotech Battles so if things go well it'll be a group effort to get something off the ground. In their March update posted yesterday Palladium publically announced that they are in fact reviewing doing a minis line (hell yes!)

● In addition to Carmen's efforts, Palladium has been approached by two different people about making a Robotech® miniatures game. We are currently entertaining the possibilities.

What they need to know is if gamers want such a product and if you'd be willing to buy Robotech Minatures should they be available. (instead let me ask who the hell wouldn't buy them???)

So please make sure to go on their forums and on facebook and leave them a comment saying: yes I want those minis!

It's still a long way from a green light but it is very encouraging to get a foot in the door, and that there is a chance for people to express their interest and show that therre is a demand for a miniatures line.

I believe a solid Robotech Miniatures game is long over due and would get a lot of notice if we can get the word out.

Here's the basic process for creating these miniatures
1. Create a 3D CAD model in Maya or Rhino
2. Have the 3D model printed via rapid prototyping
3. Clean up the printed model with a micro sand blaster and files
4. Mold the printed model in silicone
5. Using the molds cast a copy in resin or metal

Creating the 3D model takes a considerable amount of time especially when trying to accurately replicate a per-exsisting design. The average time for a wholly constructed CAD model takes me between 60-90 hours. Most of the models I've worked on part time over a period of several months.

Cleaning the printed models is very tedious detailed work and took me around 30 hours each. If the models are not cleaned and primed with paint there are a number of lines visible on the surface called stepping. Stepping marks are difficult to see on the print but become much more visible when the model is painted and also create problems with the molding step if they are left on the model.

The original master model takes a huge time investment to create but once all the the clean up is done just about any number of models can be produce by casting them either in resin or pewter. Depending on the material it's cast in a copy can be done in a matter of 2-3 minutes for metal and about half an hour for resin.

This morning I met with Carmen Bellaire to talk more about miniatures for Rifts® and Robotech®. Next up is to have a chat with Jon Paulson who sent me a couple of physical samples of his work. They arrived over the weekend and were very impressive.
