This thread was originally created by me on the old RoboTech forum thread... Granted it is a bit different from that time, but that's because it was years and years ago.

Khyron had gone up against Rick a few times and always came out worse.
Miriya comes in while Rick is in the hospital.
Khyron doesn't know this and goads Miriya into going after an "expert pilot, one that cannot be beaten, not even by you."
I haven't watched the show in a while so I'm not sure of his exact wording.

Anyway, Miriya took a squad down in the hopes to drag Rick out and test her skills against his.
However, since he was in the hospital, Max was the one with the most skill out on the battlefield at that time.

Just think how different things would have been, had Rick not been injured.
Miriya and Max fell in love and that union was what helped end the war.

Rick was torn between Lisa and Minmei.
He wouldn't have fallen for Miriya, the war would have gone on for far longer!

Actually I think Rick might've ended up killing Miriya in battle. He even came close to taking out Khyron once too. Episode name escapes me atm. But I think Khyron got away because of Azonia's interference.

Funny, half year ago I remarked the same thing during a topic.

Khyron actually did a very off-character remark during episode 8: he actually recognised he was facing a powerfull opponent while fighting Rick.

I think both Rick and Max were extra-ordinarily skilled pilots (so was Roy). But Max being 'just' a pilot at the time, not a commander, meant he was able to focus entirely on flying and fighting, wereas the other two had to pay attention to their duties as commanders as well. So Max seemed the only ace at the time.
