Why No Robotech LOVE, LIVE ALIVE? was created by Adam_Schiller

For those unfamiliar with the basis of the topic, "Love, Live Alive" was a single-episode MOSPEADA OVA produced in Japan following the run of the original series. It featured Yellow (Dancer) performing "her" various songs and meshed with both original animation and animation taken from the television series. --ANS

The current era of Robotech is definitely aimed toward the MOSPEADA/New Generation section of the Robotech timeline, and as much can be seen with the (logical) release of The Shadow Chronicles. As such, vehicles and character stylings directly related to the "Invid War"-era are of genuine relevance. This, combined with the (likely) lack of huge demand for ArtMIC's OVA series amongst both Japanese and non-Japanese licensors means that bringing Love, Live Alive to the Robotech world would not only be relatively simple, but also effective to add-upon the existing, expanding universe.

To be sure, there are several counterarguments to this idea.

The first would be the modernist ideal that "the characters and designs are outdated and thus would not attract the current generation of animé fans." To this, I can only reply with: NEWSFLASH--the majority of Robotech-related merchandise already fails to do that. Truth be told, most people who appreciate Robotech would appreciate Love, Live Alive for what it is--an exciting music video collection set to beautiful 1980s-style cel-based Japanese art.

The second would be that "the licensing fees would be too astronomical for Harmony Gold to handle." To this, I cannot fully give a rational answer; the price would be set by ArtMIC and whomever else owns the licensing rights to the Love, Live Alive. Nevertheless, with American (and likely, worldwide) rights to MOSPEADA laying solely in the hands of Harmony Gold already, there is no competition; ArtMIC would be basically faced with taking free money or leaving it. Secondly, the licensing fees (if desired) could likely be lowered if the Japanese audio (likely worked with the Japanese record company) was not included.

As a connection to the second argument, for a true "Robotech" feel, the logical replacement for all audio would be Michael Bradley's brilliant songs made for the series. Given Harmony Gold's current support of Mr. Bradley's work via the "Lonely Soldier Boy" series of albums, this could also serve to be a fantastic vessel to introduce his music (and, from a marketing aspect, sell some CDs or MP3s) to new and old fans alike.

Thirdly, the argument could be made that "Robotech needs to be looking forward with new merchandise," to which the easy reply is that the gross majority of foreseeable Robotech products is, in fact, built off of the original television series. Alpha fighters, The Masters RPGs, posable figures--all based off of old topics, with a lot of stuff coming from New Generation because it has the greatest relevance to The Shadow Chronicles and its forthcoming brethren. Love, Live Alive's release would give Robotech a new face in the video marketplace--something which can never be undervalued, as the video game "Robotech: Battlecry" so very well-illustrated.

In conclusion, there is very little reason why the release of a Robotech version of Love, Live Alive would not be a grand thing for Harmony Gold. Cheap to acquire (low licensing fees); cheap to produce (using existing animation and music); and of great potential to expand Robotech's line of merchandise while simultaneously offering a chance to attract new fans to follow the franchise's The Shadow Chronicles era. With all of these things in-tow, the only remaining question is WHY NOT?
