I cranked out out a plausible command structure of UEF, & posted this in RT.com Hardcore forum. Just wanna share it with you guys here.

UEF Organisational Structure

The Army of Southern Cross specifically refers to UEF / UEDF field Army. Not only that, RT.com timeline narrows in very nicely:

2029 April

In the face of iminent hostilities, the Army of the Southern Cross (made up of elite troops from the United Earth Forces), prepares its counterattack. Details about the enemy are announced to the public and the government and military prepare for war.

2029 May

A combined attack by Earth's defense forces against the Robotech Masters' flagship results with heavy losses. The Masters retaliate, and attack a major military base near Monument City. The attack is successfully repelled by the quick action of several local units, but the weaknesses of the United Earth Forces against Masters have become apparent.

2029 July

The Robotech Masters launch a clandestine expedition to excavate the ruins of the SDF-1. They are discovered by two UEF soldiers on patrol. One soldier is captured and held in the Masters' command vessel.

2029 August

An undeclared cease fire is broken when the Robotech Masters attack and destroy a UEF base. Twenty human survivors are taken captive, leading to public outrage.

The eg. United States Armed Forces consisted of US Army, US Navy (with Naval Aviation), US Air Force & US Marine Corp (with US Marine Air Corp).

This analogy works well with UEF / UEDF structure in 2020s to 2031.

United Earth Forces is made up of UEDF & Expeditionary Force circa 2015 - 2030. I constructed a plausible theory of the UEF structure from that particular period.

UNITED EARTH DEFENCE FORCE

- Southern Cross Army is UEF/UEDF field Army.
SCA consists of:

-> Alpha Tactical Armored Corp (ATAC): The crack & elite unit of Southern Cross Army that exclusively issued the variable VHT. Capable of both surface & spaceborne mission.

-> Tactical Corp (TC): The main body of the Army with specialised units such as Recon Escort Patrol (REP), Cold Weather Offense Squad (CWOS), Humid Climate Offensive Squad (HCOS), Mountain Offensive Squad (MOS), Desert Squad (DS) & Jungle Squad (JS).

-> Civil Defence Unit (CDU): Comprised of 1st RT war vets & civilians, & possibly regarded as reserves unit & formed as 2nd line of defence.
[much like US Army's Army National Guard]

- Southern Cross Navy is UEF/UEDF Navy.

-> Southern Cross Navy (SCN): Consists of surface naval detachment (possible Daedalus carriers & Prometheus submersibles) & possibly Naval Aviation. The SCN also has elite commando unit, which is;

-> Sea Squad Unit (SSU) - much like today's USN SEAL unit.

- Tactical Air Force is UEF/UEDF Airforce.

-> Tactical Air Force (TAF): The main terrestrial air component of UEF, sometime supported by aerospace unit like TASC. TAF is also consist of its sister unit;

-> Civil Defense Flying Corp (CDFC): Comprised of 1st RT war veteran VF pilots, & possibly regarded as reserves unit & formed as 2nd line of defence.

- Tactical Space Corp is UEF/UEDF Space Navy (much like UN Spacy).

-> Tactical Space Corp (TSC): The parent body of UEF HomeFleet, the UEF armada specificically tasked of guarding & protecting Earth & its sister colonies (like Mars) in the Sol System while patrolling the Sol-System from external threat like rogue surviving Zentraedi. TSC consists of;

-> Cosmic Unit (CU): An elite & specialised Special Force troops well versed with spacecraft boarding actions or space based combat.

-> Tactical Armored Space Corp (TASC): The mecha component of TSC. TASC operated both from TSC spacecrafts or reinforced TSC ALuCE moon base & from TAF airfield. Often supported TAF during below Earth orbital air assault missions.

-> Liberty Observer Group: An UEF escort flotilla consist of TSC (with CU & TASC component) that form the Space Station Liberty defence, which was a strategic orbital observation outpost as of 2020 - 2031.

UNITED EARTH FORCES

Expeditionary Force (2022 - 2031)

As for Robotech Expeditionary Force, as of 2022 - 2031 consists of:

- Tactical Space Corp (TSC-EF) minus TASC detachment. The main armada of UEF-EF colonizing the deep space for humanity off-Sol System colonies & a special taskforce under "Pioneer Mission" . Most likely manned by a large numbers of micronised Zentraedi who're well versed with space exploration, augmented by veteran humans personnels. The mecha combat for both terrestrial & aerospace elements for TSC-EF are;

-> United Earth (Space) Expeditionary Marine Corp (UEEMC): Largely made up of veteran micronised Zentraedi well versed with planetary ground assault strike, with Terran personnels supplemented alongside the allied Zentraedi. Worked closely with its sister unit, Expeditionary Marine Aerospace Corp.

-> United Earth (Space) Expeditionary Marine Aerospace Corp (UEMAC): Largely Terran units, manned by both with new & veteran of 1st RT War. The main aerospace & aerial combat component for EF & TSC-EF. Sister ervice of UEMC.

-> SCA-EF Terrestrial Detachment: Made up by elite SCA units, alongside Zentraedi Regiments, beefed by deep-space colonies militias, this is the main surface combatants for EF.

RDF or REF is just generalised or colloquoial terms for both UEDF & UEEF respectively.

Straight from the RT animation, only "United Earth Defence Forces" & "United Earth Forces" that are being used extensively to describe both so-called RDF & explicitly SCA.

Thanks to RT:SC animation, we already know REF is actually "United Earth Expeditionary Forces".

There you have it, from canonical RT animation, the UEDF, UEF, UEEF.

But how to solve the UN thingie? Simple, from semi canonical RT comics published by Wildstorm, the early United Earth Government in 2001 - 2010 is actually known as "United Nations of Earth Government", of course, from RT.com timeline:

2005 January

United Nations of Earth government is officially established.

There you have it. However, to justify the 'UN' words that emblazoned every piece of Terran mecha in RT: Macross Saga, perhaps UNITED NATIONS ARMED FORCES(UNDF) would sufficed to describe early UEG armed forces in 1st RT War.

Southern Cross Army is UEF/UEDF field Army

No, not a field army, as that is an organizational term above that of Corps (Division, Corps, Army)...much like the US had several Field Armies during the American Civil War like The Army of the Potomac, The Army of the Virginia etc.

The Army of the Southern Cross is THE ARMY, not an army. This is established via dialogue in Metal Fire. Its further reinforced by dialogue in the proposed Sentinels series:

Major General Hunter: I wish I could just order those troops back to base.
Lord Breetai: What's stopping you?
Hunter: Military protocol. When those troops are on the ground they are under the direct jurisdiction of the Army of the Southern Cross. Edward's calls the shots.

Brigadier General Rolf Emerson (later Lt. General), Major General Hunter (later Admiral), Vice Admiral Hayes, Colonel Wolfe, Major Carpenter, Commander Tessel, Lieutenant Borgnine and Lt. Commander Scott Bernard are all considered to be United Earth Air Force (not Navy, which refers solely to 'Wet' Navy). We know this because Rick's file in Robotech Art 3 says he is a Major General Robotech Expeditionary Air Force as well as the fact that Major Carpenter is the commander of a large 'naval' vessel as well as its air component.
