Well it was supposed to be the series after the macross saga that tied in the robotech masters. But the series did not go well and was canceled.
I am sure someone else will jump in here with more info. You can watch on youtube just keyword sentinels.

Robotech II: The Sentinels (1987, cancelled)
Main article: Robotech II: The Sentinels
This aborted American-produced series would have followed the continuing adventures of Rick and Lisa Hunter and the Robotech Expedition during the events of The Robotech Masters and The New Generation. The feature-length pilot is comprised of the first three (and only) episodes that were produced. Being a sequel/spinoff to the combined series, The Sentinels featured characters from all three Robotech sagas and introduced the SDF-3 along with an overview of their new mission.
According to director Carl Macek in Robotech Art 3: The Sentinels, the proposed 65-episode series was canceled after the crash of the dollar/yen exchange rate and lack of support by toy partner Matchbox. Efforts to petition the completion of this series have gone nowhere, but the pilot was released on VHS by Palladium Books and on DVD by ADV Films.

Basically, Sentinels is like this: Rick, Lisa, Max, Miriya, Dr. Lang, Minmei, and the rest of the Robotech Expeditionary Force travel in the SDF-3 to Tirol to make peace with the Robotech Masters. Once they arrive, they find the Masters have left on their way to Earth and the Invid have invaded the Masters' homeworld. The REF fights the Invid and teams up with a group of anti-Invid aliens called the Sentinels. They travel across the galaxy, freeing planets from the Invids' invasions. Eventually, the Invid Sensor Nebula detects the Flower of Life on Earth, so the Regess and her Invid invade the planet, leaving the REF to face the Regent's Invid. After defeating the Regent, the SDF-3 prepares to rejoin the REF back at Earth to take it back from the Invid, but they disappear during the fold back to Earth.
What happened to the SDF-3 after that is, of course, still a mystery.

Unfortunately, only the first three episodes were ever made before the project was cancelled. Fortunately, those episodes are available on DVD from ADV and come in the Robotech Protoculture Collection. The shooting scripts for the first six episodes were also released by the Malibu Graphics Publishing Group.
Beyond that, Carl Macek released in outlines for the entire series in the book Robotech Art 3. This book has a lot of designs from the series and character profiles as well.
Using the scripts and the outlines, Brian Daley and James Luceno (under the pen-name Jack McKinney, of course) novelized the entire series over the course of five books. However, the books eventually diverted from the original source material in order to make them better fit with the rest of the Robotech novels. These books are, in order, The Devil's Hand, Dark Powers, Death Dance, World Killers, and Rubicon. The Robotech novel The End of the Circle concludes the story, but is technically not part of The Sentinels. The End of the Circle was based on ideas for the unproduced Robotech III: The Odyssey that would have been made after The Sentinels.
The series was turned into a comic book by Eternity Comics, and later Academy Comics, but the series wasn't completed until Wildstorm Comics released Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles in order to link The Sentinels to The Shadow Chronicles. Antarctic Press also released their own comic book sequel to The Sentinels called Rubicon (totally unrelated to the McKinney novel) that was canceled after two issues.
Palladium also released an RPG series that adds to the plot of the series.

Every source for The Sentinels diverged either from what we learned of The Pioneer Mission/REF in Robotech or from the scripts and outline Carl made. The comics mostly followed the novels. The RPG almost got it right, but flubbed some stuff.
Interesting facts about The Sentinels:
- The Army of the Southern Cross formed the Ground Forces component of the Expeditionary Force. Unlike the novels and RPG, the ASC is part of the RDF (a Service Branch), but the REF is a Combat Command of the RDF (ala the modern US Central Command), not an independent Service Branch. Colonel Edwards is the ASC Commander onboard the SDF-03.
- Major General Hunter was in the Air Force (which had control of almost all Air and all Space Operations). Hunter is said to be the commander of the SDF-03's Robotech Expeditionary Air Force contingent.
- Ikazuchi's are drop ships (which makes sense because the massive doors on the front and side make it the biggest roll on/roll off platform available). And were definitely built BEFORE the REF left for Tirol.
- Depending upon your level of 'what is canon' for The Sentinels, the REF also included all the Southern Cross ships like the Tristars and so on. They are clearly shown fighting the Invid over Tirol in The Toy Fair video. Rolf Emerson also accmpanied the REF, meaning he was shipped back later.
Now, given what Robotech is and how The Sentinels suffered from continuity issues due to its rushed nature, a revamped version would be in order. However, given Tommy Yune's apparent stupidity when it comes to organizational structure, he has separated the ASC from the REF. He further elevated the REF to that of a Service Branch. One has to wonder what kind of mush passes for his brains these days as that is quite possibly the most asinine thing ever. For those that can think clearly, that means the REF and ASC have to compete for allocation of funding, munitions, armaments etc. Basically, he has created an organization that is archaic, more akin to a 19th Century military force than that of a modern 21st Century one. As little as Carl Macek understands military organization, he at least got it right when HG decided to do Robotech and The Sentinels.
The biggest problem with The Sentinels as envisioned was the fact the REF encountered the Invid prior to the end of the 2nd Robotech War. That is shown to be demonstrably false by referencing several episodes: Outsiders, Catastrophe, Eulogy, Enter Marlene and Ghost Town. Instead, the REF should have fought the remnants of Dolza's Zentraedi, space pirates and aided in the establishment of numerous deep space colonies. After the Invid Invasion, they can find Tirol and begin warring against the Invid.

Is that ever mentioned in Robotech? Because I was under the impression that only happened in SDF Macross.

The UEF thought thev Masters were renegade Zentraedi as late as Metal Fire. An odd sort of conclusion if all of Dolza's command was destroyed.
Colonel Rochelle speculated that Zor Prime's recon force were space pirates in Half Moon. Again, an odd conclusion if the REF had not reported encountering commerce raiders/scavengers.
