Karl Urban has been confirmed for the leading role in Judge Dredd by producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of the new film. Urban had been rumoured for the role already, but in a Movie-Con Q&A this evening the pair confirmed that he has been cast for the film, shooting in South Africa soon.
“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago," said Macdonald. "Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real."
"There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision."
Ladies and gentlemen who are Judge Dredd fans, that sound you hear is music in your ears. More from Movie-Con's panels this evening here, including news on 127 Hours and Never Let Me Go and the batshit insane looking A Town Called Panic, and check back over the weekend for more.

So is this a Redux from Stallone's version or a sequel??? The 1st movie was alright but not great. The best line was Rob Schneider saying, "You are Above the Law" in Stallone's voice.
Oh an Diane Lane was very nice Eye Candy!

FOLLOWING MORE ON THE STORY...
the latest attempt to bring the comic character to the screen following Sylvester Stallone's disastrous 1995 attempt. I didn't think there was much more to confirm about Urban's role in the movie, considering how many times he happily talking about his casting, but Empire has at least changed tactics and gotten the news from the producers instead.
"We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd," said producer Andrew Macdonald, as if we all didn't fall in love with Urban after Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. Macdonald also promised to erase pretty much all your bad memories of the terrible Stallone incarnation of the story:

First Look: Karl Urban in "Judge Dredd" Remake
www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=19772&count=0
Today we have the first look at Karl Urban (Star Trek) in the upcoming remake of "Judge Dredd." Apparently this is only a test shot, but still gives a good idea of how the character will look in the new movie. Check it out below.
Plot: "Dredd" takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary.
"Dredd" is directed by Peter Travis (Vantage Point) from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later). It is tentatively set to hit theaters in 2012.

the main problem of the 1995 movie was the script and some bad acting and some characters out of place like Rob Schneider's character visualy speaking was great and the score made by Alan Silvestri was amazing
Karl Urbain is great actor, he can play very phisical roles as well as the emotional or dramatic roles , I think he is the perfect choise

New Official Judge Dredd Pic Online

Karl Urban is still the law...
18 July 2011
We’ll say this about the new Judge Dredd – he clearly doesn’t like to spend a lot of money on lighting. Okay, we realise Lionsgate is going for moody and stylish, with the added bonus of hiding elements of the costume until they’re ready for the big reveal, but the new official image of Karl Urban as Mega City One’s tough-as-nail’s lawman doesn’t exactly give you the clearest look at him.
Still, it’s a new picture and it’s good to see that Urban certainly seems to have the Dredd visual down – despite the helmet still appearing to be a little big for his noggin.
In case you weren’t aware, this new Dredd adapts the 2,000 AD comic into the tale of the judges who patrol the streets of the aforementioned city, one of the few remaining bastions of civilization on Cursed Earth. Well, we say civilization, but crime is rampant and terror is around every corner. In order to combat it properly, the judges have full authority to execute wrongdoers.
The film will see Dredd and new recruit Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) getting trapped in one of the city’s more scum and/or villainy-infested blocks as a siege takes place. Pete Travis is behind the camera, and Lena Headey, Domhnall Gleeson and Langley Kirkwood are also in the cast.
Dredd is reportedly set to hit our screens this December.

I want to like this, but it just seems so small compared to the last one, and Dredd is NOT a character that can ever be described as small. I'm not a Dredd fan though so I don't know if this is closer to the OSM.
