I'm not a big animation type, but I do environments for games. In my final stretch run in college now, grad in December working on my demo reel.

I just got bored the other night and whipped that scene out in bout 4 hours. I really need to redo the lighting and get the displacement maps and subdivisions done on that model to bring it to life.

I AM IN THE SAME BOAT AS YOU.

I HAVE SOME SMALL BACKROUND ON ANIMATION THROUGH SCHOOL, BUT HAVE NOT APPLYED MYSELF TO KEEP DOING IT. I WANTED TO ANIMATE AS MUCH AS ROBOTECH AS I COULD. JUST FOR FUN OF COURSE. I STUDIED MAYA AND PHOTOSHOP AND PHOTOSHOP ILULLUSTRATOR IN COLLEGE.

BUT WITH WORK AND TIGHT SCHEDUAL IT IS IMPOSIBLE FOR ME TO BE A GOOD ANIMATOR.

I AM GLAD YOU INTO IT AND SHOWING US YOUR WORK. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I LIKE YOUR KYTE. BUT AM GLAD YOU SHARE WITH US YOUR STUFF. AND WHEN YOU GET TEH MOVIE REEL GOING, THEN I REALLY WANT TO SEE THAT ONE.

Well I can do some CG, right now im learning Blender 3D on my new Linux system. I use to use Carrara Studio 2.1 but now Blender is becoming so powerful and as such is free as its open source, it would be a waste not to learn this powerful software package.

It won't be long when Blender will overtake Maya and Softimage XSI, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can from this extremely powerful software package.

We'll have to see, maya is soon to be packaged with Renderman(TM Pixar Studios). I myself don't use maya though, I use 3DSMAX, Zbrush, mudbox. Oh and Headus UV for the UVW layouts.
Autodesk owns Maya now also so I don't forsee them allowing too many newcomers to destroy what they created as the pinacles of 3d apps. Never tried that new stuff so I cannot make a honest decision there, but if Pixar(top 5 animation studios) trusts their works to autodesk products, then I'll stick with those also. Kinda hard to try and work in those places not knowing the packages they use.

As far as my movie reel goes...we'll have to see, I'm not an animator, im a level/environment designer. Currently I don't have time to animate personal projects with 4 production classes and my Environmental Demo production class starting in 4 weeks. Can we say no life for 11 weeks straight?

Oh wow just checked out the Blender 3d site...im impressed. One question though, can the files be exported as a .obj file or no? If so, then its almost perfect. If not then it limits me to one app only.
