Maybe it looks like a challenge coin because it was made by an Air Force guy and he's using the challange coin company to have them produced. I guess that makes it a challenge coin.

Now for those of you not acquainted with the tradition of challenge coins, let me fill you in. First a disclaimer, the rules may be quite different between services, but these are the Air Force rules...

Every suadron in the Air Force has its own unique coin. Every member of the squadron is supposed to have the squadron coin (Current squadron, you previous squadron's coin does not count.) The member is required to carry the coin on their person at all times. If challenged, and the individual does not have the coin on them, they must buy beverages for the challenger. If they do have the coin on them, the challenger must buy.

There are other rules that the squadron my apply such as:

Using the word "Coin" initiates a check. Therefore refer to the item as an RMO (Round Metal Object)

Dropping the coin or other buffoonery initiates a check.

If checked in a group, everyone found without a coin must buy.

You may not deface the coin, to include drilling a hole in it so that it may be worn on a chain around the neck.

Well, that's all I can think of. And they take that "on you at all times" thing seriously. I knew a guy who got checked in the shower! And he had it!

Sounds about right. Navy does them pretty much the same way, but you can also earn coins from some commands. I earned an "Admiral's coin" for special service to the Flag staff on our ship. Some can be bought but these are different then the Squadron and Division Coins. Having them dosen't count if you are challenged. Though i do know of one guy who when challenged and turned up not to have his AIMD coin he was asked to surrender one of HIS admiral's coins rather then a drink LOL. I still have some of my Non-Command coins floating around somewhere, I'll post pics if i locate them. Can't wait to get this RT coin!

Its about the Same for the Corps.
In the grunt units I have been in, the past, The higher the coin wins ( SGTMJR,General,President coin...Etc..)
It varies alittle from Base to base...

Yeah, LVS, I got one from the commander of AFSOC (Air Force Special Operations Command). He flew on my plane in theater (Afghanistan) and presented me with the coin after the mission. Another was presented by the chief of AETC (Air Education and Training Command) Here's a picture of them...

Ok, here is a picture of the full color coin. The only change we plan on making is to make the small circle on the side of the SDF-1 white instead of black. Other than that, this is what it will look like.
