From what I understand, Rick was somewhat sheltered from the Global war. His life revolved around this plane, and performing in competitions, and shows.
At the time the show was written, many were still holding onto hippie values left over from the '60s and '70s. These sentiments to written into Rick's character for the first episode (as well as Kyle later on.). I also think a lot of Rick's attitude stemmed from resentment for Roy's leaving his dad's airshow and not returning when promised.

Well, when your ONLY love is planes and someone who you holds dear to your heart uses that to corrupt its purpose (ie shooting down people "murder") that is a BIG thing. Remember Rick only joined up to fly planes. The other stuff was just collateral damage. Later his motives change to protecting the women he loved and that's noble.

Remember Louie and the Pupil Pistol...same thing.

Reflex weaponry might be like this...If I'm fighting a war using hand Grenades and the other side has nuclear bombs, who cares about ground war tactics. Breetai seen Zor's ship as a possible chance that they unlocked reflex weaponry. "But why do they use such primitive weapons?"...Did the humans figure it out? I'll use caution just in case.
