Part 1 of 5. Two of the greatest anime legends of all time are about to collide in one epic saga! The Lion Force team faces the return of a mysterious ancient adversary that could jeopardize the very existence of Voltron itself. The repercussions threaten to reach across the fabric of time and space, all the way to Earth. How will Roy Fokker and the Skull Squadron cope with such a new menace, especially with the Zentraedi looming over Macross Island? What opportunities will King Lotor pursue in a crisis like this?

Now thanks the to crossover, we thought that this was one great, giant opportunity to bring Roy back with an alternate take. So fans who thought "Wow, I always wanted to see more of Roy," but they'll do a double-take because this is a great way to challenge fans. This is an alternate universe and we've very clearly defined that to fans with some of the art that we've released, with some fans calling him the "Pirate Roy."
On the "Voltron" side, there were elements where, when I was watching the Japanese episodes, I saw underlying storylines that were written out. I don't know whether they were removed because they were too intense for American audiences, but what I did was take the Japanese elements of "GoLion" and blended them in here.

Some of the good folks over at MW probably summed it up best.
quote:
Where to start with this? First, Robotech cannot be marketed in Japan. Macross can, but HG doesn't have those rights. Second, Macross Frontier might still have a fanbase, but the original series doesn't have a widespread following. Third, it's still better than Golion's following. Fourth, American comics are not terribly popular in Japan.
The first point is really the only one that matters, though.
end quote
Not that any of this effects those of you outside Japan, but the statement regarding the Japan market seem completely misinformed and surprisingly naive imo.

Like you said, it's probably just an innocent mistake. Probably Bob Koplar wasn't aware of Harmony Gold's licensing limitations. Not that any of this effects those of you outside Japan, but the statement regarding the Japan market seem completely misinformed and surprisingly naive imo.

ROBOTECH IS NOT COMPLETELY BANNED IN JAPAN. ONLY THE MACROSS PORTION OF IT. LOOKING AT THE COVER IMAGE ALREADY OUT THERE, IT'S STAYING TRUE TO THE FEEL OF A REBOOT IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. IP WISE LOOKS LESS LIKE MACROSS BUT MORE LIKE CAPTAIN HARLOCK AND VOLTRON. IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE HOW IT TEST THE WATERS IN A JAPAN MARKET.
EVEN THE PLANE THAT IS SHOWN ON THE COMIC IS AN EXACT COPY OF THE F14. DOES NOT EVEN HAVE THE WELL KNOWN KITE EMBLEM BUT THAT OF THE U.S. AIRFORCE. SO NO MACROSS IP PROBLEM THERE. ONLY QUESTION IS THE LION BOOSTER THAT IS LIKE THAT OF THE VERITECH.
THOUGHT THE REST OF THE COMIC IS STILL REMAINED TO BE SEEN.

There's a concious effort during the production of Sentinels by HG & Tatsunoko in redesigning SDF: Macross' characters into RT II: Sentinels Animation. One of the chief reasons was that since SDF: Macross & Macross DYRL are very popular in Japan, thus it would be very risky & confusing of the same character designs from Macross were to be used in RT II: Sentinel.
Carl Macek mentioned this in RT Art 3.
Furthermore, I hardly thinks Robotech could make it into Japan, unless it is a rebooted Robotech series.
Maybe RT: Shadow Chronicles or Shadow Rising might have a chance to be marketed in Japan, but that depends on how Tatsunoko tackled the fickle & competitive (saturated too) anime market there.

NO DISTRIBUTOR WOULD PICK UP SHADOW CHRONICLES.
