Yesterday we showed you an unofficial promo image taken from London Toy Fair. Both images show an edgier, more anime-styled ThunderCats.



We at MTV Geek have a special treat for ThunderCats fans -- a new official image, straight from Cartoon Network/Warner Bros., from the revamped cartoon coming out later this year!

Official Press Release:

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C's use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, "ThunderCats" characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new "ThunderCats" will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O's ascension to the throne - and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost - takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

"ThunderCats" is executive produced by Sam Register ("Teen Titans," "Ben 10," "Batman: The Brave and the Bold"). Michael Jelenic ("Batman: The Brave and the Bold," "Wonder Woman") and Ethan Spaulding ("Avatar: The Last Airbender") are the producers.

The new looks not all that different from the original tv series, more stylized and a bit grittier.


Will have to wait until I see what the series is actually like but I'm looking forward to it.

BTW, if I'm not mistaken WB owns Cartoon Network studios.

YEAH, LION-O LOOKS ALMOST LIKE LINK FROM LEGEND OF ZELDA. AND WHATS UP WITH THAT ARMOR? LION-O NEVER NEEDED IT. MAKES HIM LOOK MORE WEEK THAT WAY.

At first glance you might think you're looking at the old Thundercats show from the 1980s when watching the trailer. The character faces are more anime, but there's a vintage simplicity in the animation style that harkens back to how shows were drawn when the original aired. Lion-O, Panthro or any of the old vintage character designs would be right at home if dropped into this new Thundercats world.

Another touch of nostalgia comes from Larry Kenney who voiced Lion-O in the original show. Kenney returns in the new Thundercats to voice Claudius, ruler of the Thundercats on Thundera. The similarity between the old Lion-O voice and new Claudius voice is unmistakable.

Thundercats hits the Cartoon Network this fall and brings with it a whole line of merchandising including toys and more.

Not a bad looking figure. I've never been really impressed with Bandai's action figure lines in the US but this makes me want to buy...
