What can I say? When I got the tweet from ANN, I was stunned and immediately, deeply saddened.
Carl Macek will be sorely missed as many American anime fans have him to thank for their fandom. I know I do. In fact, I guess (selfishly) the saddest thing for me is that I never got the chance to meet him in person to thank him. Robotech helped open my eyes to what animation can do and be. How it can truly entertain and inspire you.
Thank you, Carl. As I said before, you will be sorely missed.

I remember meeting Carl at a panel in Toronto's Anime North, the one thing that struck with me was his vast sense of humor. Very personable, he strucked me as the type that always catered to the fans and joked with them like he was a grandfather spending time with his grandchildren. I felt he enjoyed sharing his keen insight and reflections on the history and background of the development of Robotech. He never shyed upon delivering his thoughts about everything that he and others worked while on producing Robotech. He had the ability to make the fans bond with the message and themes that Robotech as a story conveyed. For that I want to say 'Thank You Carl!' for making something that became a huge part of my life. Shaped the person who I am, and create something with such innate, indescribable beauty out of animation that left everyone who first witnessed it in its initial inception completely speechless. Thank you Carl for leaving us with this great legacy. You will never be forgotten.

Having been a Macross fan first before getting into Robotech as a curiosity last year I obviously don't have the same attachment to the series that a lot of people here have and, therefore, haven't been as personally involved with, affected, or inspired by Macek as them, nor am I the biggest fan of some of the things he may have done or said over the years, but this is sad all the same.
My condolences to his family and others close to him. RIP.
