Vanquish sounds sort of like Mecha Su-Dai (which Eric Wujick probably based on Sentai, cause hey, karate chopping mecha can be sort of cool). Interesting...

No, it's nothing like that at all...it's actually based on the Reno Air Races.

These air races of the Milky Way's Age of Discovery with their extreme rules where victory or defeat is decided by battroid hand-to-hand fighting

It ain't just an air race, its also apparently a quasi-death match. Still interesting.
