It is really sad that the Tomcat left service the way it did. But rest assured that they did their fair share when they left.

During CVN72's WESTPAC in 2002 The vf-31 Tomcatters were involved with operation Southern Watch and Operation Enduring Freedom. When Cruise ended and we were all looking forward to home after 5 1/2 months at sea we got turned around New Years Day. After 2 weeks in a port down under we got the flight deck resurfaced (the F-14s were actually sliding across the deck instead of being able to steer as the non-skid had worn off after 5 months of use) We returned to the Gulf and performed operations over Iraq for Iraqi Freedom.

As you all know the Tomcat is an Intercepter. Not meant for strike warfare but upgrades to the Tomcat(Bombcat) Made it a deadly strike fighter.

Now something to think about to all of you who think the Tom is old and not able to perform today. We had in our airgroup the FIRST Squadron of Super Hornets ever to be sent into combat, VFA-115 Golden Eagles. We also had Two other Hornet squadrons on board. These things are designed to be "strike" fighters. By the end of deployment the Tomcats of VF-31 had more bombs painted on their planes then any other squadron on the ship including the Vaunted F/A-18E. They also had the best maintenance record haveing no more then ONE aircraft down hard at any time. (even the NEW Hornets were hanger pigs)

VF-31 was also the last Tomcat squadron to deploy for operations in combat. The Last cat Standing was Felix. Though he now runs on the tail of a super hornet (E model or single seat fighter) The squadron will always have the fondest memories of the Real Tomcat.


If anyone is interested in reading a good book involveing the F-14. Please google the book "Punk's War" by Ward Caroll. He was a Tomcat Driver and the book is awesome. Really puts you in the cockpit front seat and back in ways that Top Gun never dared. I Strongly recommend this book!

going to mexico city this week and will see if i can finish up on the timeline.
