EXCLUSIVE: Tobey Maguire’s Material Pictures has hired Focus Features executive Matthew Plouffe to be its new SVP Production. Plouffe, who has spent the past six years in the New York headquarters of Focus, will move to Los Angeles and start the job Oct. 1. Plouffe is currently Focus’ Director of Production and has worked on such Focus films as the Sam Mendes-directed Away We Go, Shane Acker’s 9, the Ryan Fleck/Anna Boden-directed It’s Kind of A Funny Story and most recently on the Lone Scherfig-directed adaptation of One Day that stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Plouffe wanted to move West, and the transition was done with the blessing of Focus Features chief James Schamus, who wrote and produced Maguire’s breakout film as an actor, The Ice Storm. “All of us at Focus have been blessed over the past six years to see Matt grow to become one of the smartest, hardest-working and kindest execs out there, and while we’re sad to see him go, he couldn’t have found a better opportunity than the one Tobey has offered. It’s great to see two of the smartest people in the business teaming up,” Schamus said.
Said Maguire: “I have a lot of respect for Matt. He has an impressive track record and a great eye.” Material Pictures is currently producing the Adam Shankman-directed Rock of Ages for New Line, and its development project roster includes Pawn Sacrifice, a drama about chess genius Bobby Fischer, which has David Fincher attached; Robotech, a feature based on the TV series; and the Shana Feste-scripted Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale, an adaptation of the Carolyn Turgeon novel (Material Pictures previously worked with Feste on Country Strong). Material is based at Sony Pictures. As an actor, Maguire is currently starring in the Baz Luhrmann-directed The Great Gatsby for Warner Bros.

Nic Mathieu in talks to helm WB Robotech Live Action Movie
Commercials helmer Nic Mathieu is in talks to helm the studio's adaptation of the mecha-centered Japanese cartoon series.
6:11 PM PST 1/24/2013 by Borys Kit
www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/wa...tech-director-415144
Nic Mathieu has been tapped to direct Robotech, Warner Bros.’ big-budget adaptation of the venerable anime featuring giant mechanical warriors.
The project has major franchise potential -- on the scale of Transformers -- and has been in development at the studio since 2007. Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire are producing along with Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell.
PHOTOS: Inside Hollywood's Nerdiest Offices
Many writers have worked on the screenplay, but this is the first time a director has been in negotiations to board the project.
The producers conducted an exhaustive search in the fall to find a director who could bring a cutting-edge and modern approach to Robotech, which was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Japan's Tatsunoko Productions. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.
A sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.
The project is a coup for Mathieu, a commercials director whose spots are known for their inventive CG effects but who has yet to make his feature debut.

But Warners already has shown it has plenty of faith in the burgeoning filmmaker: He is attached to direct The Wind, a David Keopp-written sci-fi project that the studio picked up in spring 2012 after being dazzled by his impressive presentation.
Mathieu also is attached to direct The Story of Your Life, an alien drama being produced by Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps.
He is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Loeb & Loeb.

RLAM CONCEPT ARTIST SPEAK

Q&A WITH NELSON DANIEL FROM CHILE
-Y Robotech…

-The Great saga that should come in a couple of years, but has passed through many hands and studios that will probably never be greenlit. Now they say that Leonardo DiCaprio is back, like Tobie Maguire, not only as actors, producers also. It can be. With the return of the Star Wars, franchise and sagas are needed to compete.
"To Robotech, I drew what would be the SDF-1 (the principle ship of the story) in a realistic way, plausible in real image, not animated. Also a Veritech (transformable plane). Since I am a fan of the show tried to be as faithful to the original design, no need to improve what is already perfect, "he says. •••

Robotech Movie Back Online With Hollywood Gang, ‘300’ Scribe Michael Gordon
deadline.com/2015/02/robotech-movie-hollywood-gang-1201364914/
by Mike Fleming Jr
February 4, 2015 2:25pm
EXCLUSIVE: The 80s anime series Robotech has been a fascination of filmmakers from Tobey Maguire to Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, Gough & Millar, and Lawrence Kasdan. All have tried to adapt the series for the big screen. Stepping up to hopefully get it done is Warner Bros-based producers Hollywood Gang, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton producing and 300 and G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra scribe Michael Gordon set to write. They are already eyeing a filmmaker to steer that development and I’m told that Andy Muschietti is the guy they covet. In the 1980s, Robotech, which was brought to America by Frank Agrama and Harmony Gold, was the TV show which introduced a generation of American kids to the revolutionary visual style and open ended storytelling of anime.

Sony Takes Over ‘Robotech,’ Plans Film Franchise (EXCLUSIVE)
variety.com/2015/film/news/robotech-movi...es-anime-1201460191/
March 25, 2015 | 03:46PM PT

Senior Film and Media Reporter @BrentALang
Sony Pictures has secured rights to the popular anime series “Robotech” and views the project as a potential film franchise.
The studio hopes to move quickly into production on the live-action feature, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton (“300,” “The Immortals”) producing and Michael Gordon (“300,” “GI Joe”) writing the script. The series centered on humanity’s use of robot technology to fend off alien invaders and has an “Independence Day” meets “Star Wars” vibe. It is seen as having the global appeal necessary to become a blockbuster property.
The project will be overseen at Sony Pictures by Sony Pictures Entertainment Group President Doug Belgrad, Columbia Pictures Production Chief Michael De Luca, and Sony Pictures Vice President of Creative Production Matthew Milam.
“‘Robotech’ is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” said De Luca. “That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, ‘Robotech’ offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”
“Robotech” derives from a series of popular Japanese TV shows that made their way over to the United States in the 1980s, eventually inspiring books, role playing games, video games, toys and collectibles.
“I’m thrilled to be back in business with Sony Pictures and Gianni and I look forward to working with the studio on this global franchise-driven opportunity,” said Canton, who ran the studio in the 1990s. “‘Robotech’ is a very significant and legendary part of the growth of anime into the force that it is today, and we’re excited to be adapting it for modern audiences.”
The rights to the material had originally been at Warner Bros. with Tobey Maguire and Akiva Goldsman on board as producers. At various points the project attracted interest from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and commercial director Nic Mathieu, but the studio never moved forward with a feature film. When they became free, they were nabbed Canton’s Atmosphere and Nunnari’s Hollywood Gang labels, who recognized the incredible potential of this as a franchise with multi-generational appeal.
“When the rights to ‘Robotech’ became available we jumped; Mark and I knew it had what big movies in today’s world must have if they want to grab everyone: insane visuals and powerful themes,” said Nunnari. “The characters in ‘Robotech’ wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology; nothing is more relevant today than that.”
Frank Agrama of Harmony Gold, which is the original intellectual property rights holder, will executive produce with Michael Gordon and Jehan Agrama. Leonard B. Rosman and Christy Duran will serve as co-producers.
The deal on behalf of Harmony Gold and the producers was negotiated by Ralph P Brescia of Bloom Hergott, together with Leonard B. Rosman, Esq. of the Law Offices of Leonard B. Rosman and Christy Duran, Esq. of Harmony Gold.
